Collin McHugh Astros

The waiver wire can be a goldmine for fantasy baseball players who are looking to boost their pitching stats. On most days, there is sure to be a starter (or three) just waiting to be scooped up who can help lead a fantasy team to glory. In today’s slice of fantasy advice, let’s take a look at some hurlers who should be in for a strong day on the hill on Aug. 7, and are quite possibly available on a waiver wire near you.

(Ownership percentages based off ESPN standard leagues)

*All stats current through 7:00 p.m. Wednesday

Wily Peralta: Milwaukee Brewers (66.2 percent)

Since being blasted for nine runs in just 4.1 innings of work back on July 8, Peralta has turned his dominance-o-meter up to the max. He’s posted a flawless 4-0 record in his four outings since that disaster, and has mowed through lineups to the tune of a sparkling 1.72 ERA. He’ll look to keep rolling along in his next start, and has a nice matchup to try and make that a reality.

The Brew-Crew will finish off their series with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday afternoon. San Fran has seen their offense display more bark than bite of late, as the team has scored two runs or fewer eight times over their last 12 contests. Combine that with a lowly .240 team average against right-handed pitching, and the San Francisco offense is likely to fall flat once again in this one.

Collin McHugh: Houston Astros (10.2 percent)

McHugh sports an ugly 4-9 record on the season, but most of that can be attributed to the woeful offense backing him up. The right-hander has actually posted a very strong 3.32 ERA and 1.11 WHIP this year, plus fantasy owners have to love his dreamy 10.14 K’s per nine innings. Perhaps McHugh can get that elusive fifth win of the season against a struggling offense in his next outing.

The Astros will finish their exciting series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Philly has been one of the weakest offenses in the game this season, as they rank just 25th in the league in runs per contest. They’re bats have been especially futile of late, however, as the team has been held to two runs or fewer in six of their past eight games.

Edinson Volquez: Pittsburgh Pirates (7.2 percent)

With the exception of a handful of hiccups, this right-hander has pitched extremely well this year. Though he’s been rocked for five earned runs or more on five separate occasions, Volquez has held opponents to three earned runs or fewer in each of his other 17 appearances. He actually posted a very strong 2.59 ERA over his last seven outings, and will look to keep motoring along in his next start.

The Miami Marlins will once again oppose the Pirates on what is expected to be a lovely Thursday evening in Pittsburgh. Though the Marlins’ offense has far exceeded expectations this season, the team has generally sputtered on the road, as they rank just 24th in the league in runs per contest. Volquez is likely to reward smart fantasy owners with a few strikeouts as well since Miami is fanning at a 24.1 percent clip against right-handed pitching, the highest mark in baseball.
