5 Pitchers Who Will Help You Win Your Daily Leagues on Aug. 9 (Early Edition)

If you're like me, then last night was a disaster for pitching unless you decided to go with Vance Worley or Hisashi Iwakuma. Stephen Strasburg was once again destroyed by the Braves and Scott Kazmir, despite getting the win, gave up too many runs. Now that the sun has risen, let's look at the top five pitchers for the early slate of games.

(Prices are based off FanDuel salary-cap leagues)

5. Jake Odorizzi - Tampa Bay Rays ($7500)

Odorizzi has experienced some ups and downs over the past month. While his 4.03 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over that span has been bad, he also has a K/9 rate of 8.46 and a 3-1 record which is good. It also helps that his opponent, the Chicago Cubs, have the third worst wOBA against right-handed pitchers for the season and they have been striking out at a 21.7-percent rate. Odorizzi may give up a couple of runs, but he should also be good for the win.

4. Max Scherzer - Detroit Tigers ($10,700)

The only reason why I don't have Mad Max ranked higher is due to his tough matchup on the road against the Toronto Blue Jays. While his 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA and 8.44 K/9 rate over the past 30 days is nothing to disregard, Toronto sports a .345 wOBA at the Rogers Centre on the season which has them ranked second overall. Additionally, the Jays have been hitting better than the Tigers lately. This makes Scherzer a good, not great, pick.

3. Corey Kluber - Cleveland Indians ($10,400)

3. Corey Kluber - Cleveland Indians ($10,400)

Kluber has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball over the past month. During that span, he has a 4-0 record with a 1.58 ERA and a K/9 rate of 9. Additionally, his swinging strike rate of 12.1 percent ranks at the top of all early game SPs. I would rank Kluber at number one, but he's facing a New York Yankees team that's ranked fourth in wOBA over the last seven days and it's not an ideal road matchup for him despite his hot streak.

2. Brandon McCarthy - New York Yankees ($7100)

Just like his opponent Corey Kluber, McCarthy has also gone 4-0 over the past month. Additionally, during that span, he's produced an ERA of 2.28 and a K/9 rate of 9.58. His matchup against the Cleveland Indians today isn't the easiest since their left-handed hitters are all swinging hot bats right now. However, the positive news is that Cleveland has been ranked 23rd in wOBA over the past week. For his price, McCarthy is an excellent pick today.

1. Marcus Stroman - Toronto Blue Jays ($7000)

The Long Island, NY. native has been living up to his hype as of late. Over the past month, Stroman has gone 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 7.88 K/9 rate. He is also a significantly better pitcher at home. His 2.82 ERA at the Rogers Centre compared to his 4.78 ERA away from there is evidence of that fact. Additionally, it helps that the Detroit Tigers have been ranked 22nd in wOBA over the past week. This makes Stroman the top SP for the early games.
