After months of using inexperienced youngsters and aging veterans to round out their rotation, the New York Yankees will finally receive some help this week. Starting pitcher Michael Pineda will be making his much awaited return to the hill on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles and his return comes at the perfect time for the Pinstripes.
It will be his first start since April 23 and the young hurler is extremely eager to get back to work. While there is likely to be some rust in his first outing since April, Pineda deserves some serious consideration in all fantasy baseball formats. He will be an innings monster and will always be a threat to rack up K’s.
Pineda looked strong in two rehab starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. The right-gander fanned 11 batters through 7.2 innings in the minor leagues, while allowing only one earned run. The starter looked like he was in midseason form.
Even more promising, Pineda was pitching beautifully before his trip to the DL. Pineda had a 1.83 ERA in 19.2 innings of work with a 1.02 WHIP and 15 strikeouts. He was off to a career year before being shutdown for a couple of months.
Pineda is only owned in 12.7% of ESPN leagues at the moment and the fireballer will be a great pickup at this point in the season. Don’t sleep on him this week, though, because he will be picked up by someone very quickly.
