The Kansas City Royals have been a real hot streak this summer. They are 22-5 in the last 27 contests and have suddenly found themselves sitting atop the AL Central. A large part of the team’s success can be attributed to the performance of journeyman starting pitcher Jason Vargas.
Vargas has been widely ignored throughout most of the fantasy baseball season, but he has quietly emerged as the team’s ace this summer. He has a 10-5 record on the season to go along with an impressive 3.17 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Even better, he has a 2.68 ERA over his last six starts (37 IP).
The southpaw hasn’t exactly been mowing down hitters, as he has just 99 K’s in 150.1 innings of work this year. However, he rarely walks batters, as he has only walked 30 batters on the entire season. He limits damage when runners are on base and his experience consistently allows him to stay ahead of hitters.
Vargas is owned in just 36.7% of ESPN formats, which means he is likely sitting on the waiver wire in nearly every single fantasy format. He is simply pitching too good to be on the wire, so double check to make sure this veteran isn’t still in the field, because he could be a brilliant pick up with the playoffs right around the corner.
