Streaming starting pitchers is a fantasy baseball strategy that is getting more and more supporters. With the frequency of injuries and surprise outings, owners are looking for that one-hit wonder. One pitcher that owners should pick up for his Friday night start is Miami Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez.

Alvarez’s first-half numbers made him an All-Star for the first time in his career. He owns a 9-5 record with a 2.43 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. He hit the DL in late July, but returned last week. In his first start back, he went seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out six batters for the win.

Alvarez is not a strikeout pitcher. He has just 89 strikeouts in 144.2 innings this season. His value comes from controlling his pitches and getting out of jams. Alvarez has allowed 146 hits this inning, but only 39 earned runs.

In his second August start, Alvarez will face the hot-hitting Colorado Rockies. The Rockies lead the league with a .277 batting average. The Rockies are seventh in batting average and fourth in home runs for the month of August, .264 and 21 respectively.

Despite the tough matchup, fantasy owners are firm believers in Alvarez. There has been an increase of 32.5 percent, bringing his total ownership percentage to 64.2.

If you need help with your starting pitching, whether you can drop a previous streaming option or just lost Garrett Richards to injury, Alvarez should be the guy at the top of your list. If he can get past the Rockies tonight, then Alvarez’s ownership should skyrocket to 100 percent, so get him while you still can.
