2014 Fantasy Football Bust: Marques Colston

Marques Colston has never been a player that I have coveted before fantasy football drafts, and he has proved me wrong time after time. This year he won’t.

Last year Colston had his first season under 1,000 yards receiving for only the second time in his career. Entering his ninth season, a decline in production is expected. There are other factors that will contribute to this decline.

Kenny Stills was a pleasant surprise for the New Orleans Saints as he logged over 600 yards and five touchdowns. The fifth-round pick comes into his second season with a serious chance of leading the team in receiving stats from the WR spot. He will start the season opposite of Colston.

Let’s not forget about the main man catching balls from Drew Brees. Jimmy Graham put up ridiculous fantasy numbers last year of over 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns. As big of an on-field mismatch Graham is, there is very little chance that his fantasy value will diminish, barring injury. All season we saw Graham targeted in all scoring chances and even on deep throws down the field. He’s the go-to man in New Orleans, not Colston.

The Saints are also prepared for life after Colston, as they drafted Brandin Cooks in the first round of this year’s draft. He will be a serious detriment to Colston’s fantasy value. So much so that many sites have him ranked ahead of Colston.

Colston will not be a bust if you can get him in the right spot in the draft. As it stands right now, he is being drafted around pick No. 80. If you can get him in the double digit rounds, then he will still have some value. What is so worrisome about him is how many balls from Brees will be left for Colston after Graham, Cooks and Stills get theirs?
