2014 Fantasy Football Buy or Sell: Dexter McCluster
The versatile Dexter McCluster hasn’t been the big playmaker that he was drafted for back in 2010, but will look to reverse that trend this season with his new club.
After a spell with the Kansas City Chiefs, the former second-round pick is now with the Tennessee Titans. Unfortunately for McCluster, his new team has good depth at running back and has some good receivers too.
Depending on the type and size of the league, I’m passing on McCluster in my draft.
The only way I would take the former Ole Miss Rebel is if my league had 16 teams and was a PPR league. He has had at least 46 receptions each season since 2011, four of which found pay dirt. Other than that, most of his success has come in the return game.
If your league settings feature return stats, than McCluster would be a good fit. Last season with the Chiefs, he was the feature return man and had 58 punts returns for 686 yards and two touchdowns.
However, most leagues don’t include return stats and the 26-year-old hasn’t had a big role in the running game since 2011 when he accumulated a career-high 114 rushes. In 2012, he rushed the ball just 12 times and a career-low eight times last season.
McCluster does offer an extra option from a receiving standpoint as we discussed above. The only issue is that he seems to be limited to just that and will continue to play such a roll in Tennessee after the Titans drafted Bishop Sankey and picked up Shonn Greene. Touches in the backfield will come on a very limited basis for the fifth-year veteran.
If you are looking for a bench player in a 16-team league, then McCluster might be a good pickup. However, his options are limited in a crowded backfield and his 5-foot-8 frame doesn’t offer a big threat in the passing game.
Plus, there is too much other talent on Tennessee’s offense that will harbor McCluster’s ability to be a difference-maker.
