Fantasy Football Week 2 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Allen Hurns

Before the Jacksonville Jaguars took the field on Sunday afternoon, I’m sure fantasy owners weren’t calling for a big game from rookie wide receiver Allen Hurns. Well, if you were one or two of those people who did predict some big-time production from the Jaguars’ rookie wide receiver from Miami, I’ll give you credit. For all the other owners out there who don’t know much about Hurns, I wouldn’t recommend running to the waiver wire to grab him — not yet.

Hurns was an undrafted rookie out of Miami and proved to be reliable receiver for the Canes during his time with the team. In his senior season, he set the single-season record for receiving yards with 1,162, so there’s no doubt that he could flourish into a solid No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in the league, but can he be a No. 2 or No. 3 guy on your fantasy roster in 2014?

The problem for Hurns is his situation in Jacksonville. The Jags aren’t a dangerous team on the offensive side of the ball and they don’t have strong quarterback play in Chad Henne. It’s not like he has Peyton Manning throwing him the ball in a high-powered offense.

It’s easy for an unknown receiver to put up one big game, because defenses don’t know how to play him. If he can repeat his four-catch, 110-yard and two-touchdown performance, or at least put up something close to it, then I could back up his play with some consistency, but we don’t know if he’s capable of that.

Also, it’s not like Hurns brought in a lot of passes, which would’ve been a good sign. The fact that he only had four grabs shows off his big-play ability, but it may also prove that he has boom or bust potential. He was targeted a solid nine times in the game, but only hauled in in four catches.

If you’re in a 14-team league, I would say that Hurns is worth an add if you want to take a chance on him, but those in 12-or-less-team leagues shouldn’t make a move on him just yet. If he can come away with a big game in Week 2, then I’d consider him even more, but for now, it’s safe to take the wait-and-see approach.
