Fantasy owners of Knile Davis are in a tough position with the playing status of Jamaal Charles up in the air for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Even worse, the Chiefs take on the Miami Dolphins at 4:25 ET, so owners will most likely not have a clearer picture come Sunday morning. Charles’ status seems to be a mystery up until game-time, but if he is unable to play, Davis will deliver in his absence.
Last week, with Charles out for much of the game, Davis had his number called upon 22 times in the run game. He tallied 79 yards and two touchdowns in those attempts. He even demonstrated a reliable array of skills in the passing game, catching six balls for another 26 yards. With quarterback Alex Smith content with being a game manager, Davis’ six-catch game is certainly not an aberration.
The Chiefs’ offense should see a fair-share of opportunities to put the ball in the end zone on Sunday. If Davis is the lead back, he certainly can finish off drives with a touchdown. Kansas City does not boast very many play making options through the air, so shoving it down the defense’s throat is clearly their best option.
The matchup with the Dolphins’ defense should not scare off fantasy owners. Miami is middle of the pack of the NFL against the rush, giving up 101.0 yards per game in two outings on the ground. Last week, the Dolphins’ defense gave up 113 yards on the ground to the Buffalo Bills, including a 47 yards rushing play to running back CJ Spiller.
Considering the projected workload and likely chance of a touchdown, Davis looks set up to deliver on Sunday afternoon. Still, owners should have a backup plan ready in case Charles decides to suit up, as this projected production is contingent on Charles not playing.
