Fantasy Football Week 3 Start or Sit: Frank Gore

There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to starting or sitting Frank Gore on your fantasy football team this week. One issue you don’t need to worry about is a drop off in talent. At the age of 31, the San Francisco 49ers’ running back still has it.

The problem is, just because he’s got it, doesn’t mean he’s going to get it. By that I mean touches. Despite averaging 4.4 yards per carry, Gore has just 29 carries and two receptions on the season. He needs to get the ball more, and there’s a chance that he will after the 49ers’ Week 2 performance.

Thanks to four turnovers by Colin Kaepernick, the Chicago Bears erased a 17-point deficit to beat the 49ers, 28-20. The consequences of an aggressive pass-heavy approach should be on Jim Harbaugh‘s mind right now. More Gore might be on the menu in Week 3.

The hope for more touches is working in Gore’s favor, but the opposing defense is not. Though it’s a small sample size, the Arizona Cardinals have been tough on opposing runners. Through two games, they’ve surrendered just 133 yards on 2.6 yards per carry.

It’s important to note those numbers were compiled against the San Diego Chargers and New York Giants – teams not really known for their rushing prowess. Gore leads a better rushing attack than those guys, but I wouldn’t expect a monster day.

On the road against a solid defense, I’d forecast the numbers at about 80 total yards and a TD. He’s a solid play, but in smaller leagues, you might have better options with a higher ceiling. In deeper leagues, I’d definitely roll with him.
