Pittsburgh Steelers RB LeGarrette Blount Not Worth Waiver Claim

Last season with the New England PatriotsLeGarrette Blount had a career renaissance. He turned a strong 2013 into a new contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, forming one of the better running back tandems in the NFL with Le’Veon Bell. There also lies the problem, as Blount is not the feature back in this tandem, limiting his value in fantasy football.

Blount had a monster Sunday Night Football game against the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 118 yards on 10 rushes for a touchdown. Those numbers will make people rush to the waiver wire for Blount, but a precious waiver claim on Blount would be a waste.

Before Sunday night, Blount had only seven rushes for 14 yards and one touchdown and no receptions. Prior to the regular season, there were some people who thought Blount was going to severely cut into Bell’s playing time. Since the games started to matter, it has become evident that Blount is clearly behind Bell in the pecking order for touches.

Looking at the schedule coming up for the Steelers, Blount makes for an interesting free agency acquisition for Week 4, but not worth a waiver claim. The Steelers will be hosting the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and after what the Atlanta Falcons did to them this past Thursday, it is not inconceivable that Blount will once again be in for a larger than normal workload with the game easily in hand before the final whistle will blow. After seeing what the Steelers did against one of the better defenses in the Panthers this past week, Blount may be an intriguing FLEX play for anyone dealing with bye week troubles.

Blount is a high risk, and potentially high reward, play for Week 4 against the Buccaneers, but it is unlikely what happened Sunday night happens again. As currently situated, Blount is only worth playing in touchdown heavy leagues, as he can vulture a goal line score here and there from Bell. Outside of that, Blount has very little to offer to your fantasy team, as Bell is the lead back and third down back as well.

If Bell were to ever get injured, Blount would step into a big role in the Steelers offense. He would slide right into the starting role and be the featured back in a Steelers offense that finally looks to be clicking. If you can afford to hold Blount on your roster, pick him up once the waiver process for the week passes. If not, let someone else waste their waiver claim on him. Blount is not worth a waiver claim, but he is worth stashing on your roster.
