Fantasy Football Week 4 Projection: Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White

Fantasy owners of Roddy White were surely disappointed that he missed the Atlanta Falcons 56-14 destruction of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, but it appears that White will be able to suit up against the Minnesota Vikings this week. It can be a risk to start a player coming off injury, especially a hamstring injury that could be re-aggravated. However, owners who need a bye week replacement at receiver will have to give White serious consideration.

The Vikings rank a respectable 13th in pass defense, but Atlanta is the proud owner of the NFL‘s No. 1 passing offense and they shouldn’t have too much trouble moving the ball. There is the possibility that things could get out of hand early and the Falcons won’t need to pass, but there should still be plenty of opportunities for White.

Based on the first two games of the season, White is the clear cut No. 2 option in the Falcons’ offense, and Matt Ryan should give him a fair amount of targets. It’s worth noting that Harry Douglas is expected to play as well, and Julio Jones will obviously be the first option. However, White is averaging seven targets a game, and he has 10 receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown in his two games this season.

White is no longer a fantasy star, but he can still be productive. The Falcons’ offense creates plenty of opportunities, and White could have a big game in his return. However, there is also a good chance he will be limited as he works his way back, and if the Falcons get an early lead Mike Smith could choose to rest White.

As much as this is a solid matchup, it is a risky move to start White until he is clearly healthy and ready to assume his normal role in the Falcons’ passing attack. If you really need him, White is a reasonable WR3 option. However, if you have safer options to fill in your wide receiver spots this week, wait it out one more week on White. There is simply too much risk to recommend throwing him right back in the starting lineup.

Final Week 4 Projection: 4 receptions, 46 yards, 0 TDs
