Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire Pickup: RB Denard Robinson

There is one big conundrum when putting a Jacksonville Jaguars running back on your fantasy team: they are always playing from behind. Jacksonville has the worst defense in the entire league. They’ve allowed 1805 yards of offense so far this year, and are giving up 38 points a game on average. This means, logically, Blake Bortles is going to be airing the ball out a lot more in order to play catch-up.

It also doesn’t help when their featured back, Toby Gerhart, runs like he is in a pool of molasses (2.6 yard per carry on 44 rush attempts).

In order to hopefully light some fire under Gerhart, the Jaguars have decided to up the competition at the running back position. Denard Robinson looks to be getting a few more carries. Robinson saw eight and nine touches respectively in Weeks 3 and 4. The outcome wasn’t an immense change of pace for the Jaguars’ ground attack, despite Robinson’s speed being a good foil to Gerhart’s power running style.

Robinson gained 33 yards against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3 and 25 on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. He’s also managed to haul in six receptions so far in 2014. If Robinson is going to have any success for your fantasy team, it’s probably going to be catching the ball opposed to running it. The Jacksonville offensive line just isn’t going to do any favors to the team’s running game. They’ve already given up 20 sacks over just four games. This doesn’t bode well for anyone in the Jaguars’ backfield.

If Robinson is available on the waiver wire, you should probably play it safe and leave him there. The Jaguars have only scored one rushing touchdown all year, and Bortles currently holds the team’s longest rush of 2014 at 20 yards. Robinson would never be anything more than a desperation flex play. He isn’t worth wasting room on your roster.
