Fantasy Football Week 5 Waiver Wire: TE Owen Daniels Worth Consideration

One tight end’s injury is another tight end’s gain, and that is the story for the Baltimore RavensOwen Daniels. Dennis Pitta was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list (hip) which means the eight-year veteran Daniels will see a much bigger role in the offensive plans.

Daniels proved he still has some gas left in the tank against the Carolina Panthers during Week 4. He caught four of his six targets for 43 yards. Joe Flacco didn’t seem to look his way other than when he needed a safety net, however. Most of his catches came in the middle of the field on attempts less than 10 yards. Unfortunately, Daniels’ eight seasons in the NFL have done some damage on his legs. Don’t look for major yardage, if any, after the catch. So far he only has seven YAC on 14 receptions.

Despite Daniels being the Ravens’ secondary tight end before Pitta’s injury, he owns the only two touchdown receptions at the position on the team, both occurring in the red zone. In fact, the only other red zone touchdown catch on Baltimore was made by fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Again, the red zone is really the only time Daniels has a chance at pay dirt because of his limited mobility. Thankfully, he still has confidence in his hands and they appear to work just fine.

If you’re suffering at the tight end position, Daniels is worth a look. He’ll probably never have the numbers a Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski can achieve, but he’s definitely good filler for an injury or a player on a bye week, especially if your league is PPR.
