Fantasy Football Week 5 Projection: Cordarrelle Patterson

The Minnesota Vikings offered a new look in Week 4 with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater taking over for Matt Cassel. The offense gelled very well with the rookie, as he threw for 317 yards and kept the Atlanta Falcons’ lackluster defense guessing all game.

The one Viking who didn’t benefit from Bridgewater’s incredible debut was the team’s most versatile threat, wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. Patterson was an afterthought on Sunday, only catching two balls on four targets for 38 yards — good enough for three measly fantasy points. Fellow pass-catchers Jarius Wright and Greg Jennings took the cake, compiling a total of 204 receiving yards on the day, with Wright receiving the most attention from Bridgewater (eight catches, 132 yards on 10 targets). What does this mean for Patterson’s fantasy value heading into Week 5′s division matchup against the Green Bay Packers?

Well, for starters, Patterson is still the Vikings’ most dangerous weapon in the offense and special-teams; some comparing him to forming Viking Percy Harvin. However, it will take some time for Patterson and Bridgewater to get on the same page. Jennings and Wright have proved to be the rookie quarterback’s favorite targets throughout the last two weeks, but Patterson still has the big-play ability to gather fantasy relevance. As time goes on and he gets acquainted with Bridgewater, I can see Jennings or Wright taking a backseat in terms of targets.

On a short week and Bridgewater (ankle) most likely not getting many practice reps in, I can see a Week 4 repeat performance for Patterson. As of right now, that sleeper you selected in your fantasy football draft should remain on your bench in Week 5. Nevertheless, don’t sleep on Patterson too long because he will have fantasy relevance soon. This might even be a good time to trade low for him and reap the benefits in the upcoming weeks.

Patterson is always dangerous when he touches the ball, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and maybe he’ll pick up a return touchdown for those who are bold enough to start him on Thursday.

Fantasy Forecast: 3 receptions for 37 yards, 1 carry for 18 yards, and a RET TD
