Week 5 Fantasy Football: Bernard Pierce’s Value Is Slowly Disappearing

After ripping off 96 rushing yards in Week 2, Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce was on the verge of becoming a weekly fantasy football starter. He had a full-time job and was supposedly taking over for the suspended Ray Rice as the team’s full-time back. Then Pierce unfortunately suffered a thigh injury and has been held out of the last two contests.

In Pierce’s absence, the team has relied heavily on Justin Forsett and Lorenzo Taliaferro. In Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers, Forsett racked up 97 all-purpose yards (66 rushing/31 receiving) and a touchdown, while Taliaferro similarly finished with 58 yards and a touchdown. Both backs once again turned in strong fantasy performances and they put much more pressure on Pierce to comeback healthy.

Luckily, Pierce should be back this week when the team travels to take on the Indianapolis Colts. He was held out last weekend as a precautionary measure, and as add as it seems to be held out in the middle of the season, Pierce is all but assured to be ready to go in Week 5.

Unfortunately, he is suddenly featured in a very crowded backfield. He isn’t guaranteed to receive a steady dose of carries when he finally returns this weekend, which could further frustrate fantasy fans. Pierce only has a couple of weeks left to prove that he is worth hanging onto in 10-man leagues, and considering we are in the middle of bye weeks, it may be sooner rather than later.
