Week 5 Fantasy Football IDP Waiver Wire: DT Sheldon Richardson

There are only so many defensive tackles worth owning in standard fantasy football IDP formats. They hardly ever reach double-digit sacks and they often come out of the game to rest due to their size. Once in awhile, though, there is a defensive tackle that proves his worth in fantasy. One of these underrated middlemen is DT Sheldon Richardson of the New York Jets.

The offense may be struggling in New York, but the defense has been one of the best in the entire league. They are currently first in the NFL against the run (63.3 yards/game) and 10th against the pass (228 yards/game). A large part of the defense’s success has come from the relentless play of their defensive line, but most importantly, due to the play of Richardson.

Richardson has registered a sack in back-to-back contests, including an impressive eight-tackle afternoon in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. The tackle registered a meager 3.5 sacks all of last season, but he still managed to amass a staggering number of tackles (78).

The mere fact that Richardson has added sacks to his stat line has caused him to become a reliable week-to-week starter. He will consistently add a handful of tackles each game, but the increased number of sacks could quietly vault him into the top-20 fantasy linemen.

Richardson is not owned in many IDP formats at the moment and the Green Monster can be a great DL2 to add off the waiver wire right now. He will consistently add over four hits per game, and as it stands right now, I think eight sacks would be a safe bet from the former first round pick.
