Fantasy Football Week 6 Start or Sit: Ronnie Hillman

Ronnie Hillman Start or Sit Fantasy Football Week 6

With Montee Ball sidelined for the next few weeks with a groin injury, the starting job as the Denver Broncos‘ No. 1 running back is up for grabs between Ronnie Hillman, C.J. Anderson and Juwan Thompson.

However, Hillman has the most NFL experience in the group, so he’ll have first dibs at proving his fantasy football worth as one of your possible starters in Week 6 against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Hillman had a decent showing in Week 5 against the the Arizona Cardinals as he finished the game with his best rushing output of the season with 64 yards on 15 carries. However, rookie RB Thompson scored the Broncos’ only rushing TD of the game on an eight-yard run into the end zone with less than five minutes left in the game. Anderson was a healthy scratch because Denver needed Thompson to play special teams, but all three RBs will most likely be active for the Broncos-Jets game.

Last year, Hillman and Ball were given early opportunities to take over the starting job in Denver. However, Knowshon Moreno (now with the Miami Dolphins) took over as the top dog because he protected the football better than the others. He went on to have the best season of his six-year NFL career.

Ball has already lost a fumble this season and Anderson appears to be the odd man out at the moment, so Hillman might only have to fend off Thompson in terms of competition in the backfield. While Thompson is the bigger back (5-foot-11, 225-pounds), Hillman (5-foot-10, 195-pounds) is the better dual-threat since he’s displayed his ability to catch a few passes from Peyton Manning out of the backfield over his three-year career.

The good news for Hillman though, is that he has the support of his quarterback as Manning recently stated:

“It’s a good opportunity for Ronnie. Ronnie has played has at different times, in different amounts, but when you’re the starting running back, running out for pre-game warmups as a starting back, there’s a different hat that you wear.”

If you have Hillman on your fantasy football squad, don’t be afraid to start him as an RB2 or at the flex position. The Jets have a tough run defense, but they were exposed by San Diego Chargers rookie dual-threat RB Branden Oliver last Sunday after he racked up 182 all-purpose yards and two TDs, and earned his right as a definite Week 6 fantasy starter.

Hillman might not have the same success, but for now, he’s the Broncos’ No. 1 RB and Manning is known to get his RBs plenty of red-zone opportunities with his unstoppable ability to move the chains on the offensive side of the ball.

However, Hillman’s biggest boost might come from Geno Smith, aka the anti-Manning.

This season, Smith has struggled mightily to keep the Jets’ offense moving in the right direction, so he’s virtually a lock to give the Broncos a lot of short-field opportunities on Sunday — Hillman could have a field day.
