Since entering the league in 2009, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree has been marred by injuries year after year, and this season appears to be no different.

Currently listed as probable for Monday night’s game against the St. Louis Rams, Crabtree’s playing time and effectiveness have both been on the decline since the season opener. Over the past two games, Crabtree has played in fewer than 60 percent of his team’s snaps as he has been hampered by a foot injury the past couple of weeks.

To make matters worse, Crabtree appears to have lost his position as one of quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s favorite targets. With the emergence of Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd, Crabtree has been seeing fewer and fewer targets this season.

So far this season, Crabtree has 25 receptions for 246 yards and just two touchdowns and he’s averaging just seven fantasy points per game. Throw in the fact that Crabtree has had three games where he’s scored fewer than five fantasy points and all signs point to him being little more than a fringe starter in fantasy leagues.

If fully healthy, Crabtree can possibly be the best receiver on the 49ers, but that is a big if.  Injury concerns, coupled with other receivers vying for targets, make it hard to justify starting Crabtree. There are other receivers out there that can get you seven fantasy points a game, and they probably don’t have to compete for targets with as many receivers as Crabtree does.
