The Green Bay Packers are notorious for taking bad players in the first round of the NFL Drafts, but where they really excel is drafting in the second round. Last year they drafted Eddie Lacy with their second-round pick and look how that turned out. To go even further, they draft fantastic receivers in the second round. In 2008, they drafted Jordy Nelson, who is now regarded as one of the best receivers in the game. They also drafted Randall Cobb in the second round of the 2011 draft. Now their most recent receiver to be drafted in the same spot is Davante Adams.
Adams was only a sophomore when he left college in the spring and was highly regarded among scouts. After redshirting in 2011, he had 102 receptions, was the Mountain West Conference freshman of the year, as well as a freshman All-American. He was Derek Carr’s favorite target last year with 131 receptions and 24 touchdowns.
Although these numbers may be a little inflated due to competition in the conference, they’re still staggering and only show the quality that he’s able to bring to a squad already loaded with talent.
The main reason why Adams is a potential fantastic sleeper is because he is now third on the depth chart. He had seemingly taken over Jarrett Boykin’s spot, partially due to injury and partially because he has performed well enough. He caught his first touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings in a blowout Thursday night game and should look to receive a lot more of the ball.
The Packers also tend to spread the ball out a lot. While Nelson is one of the leaders for receptions and targets, Cobb still gets a ton of looks, as do their tight ends. A bolstered running attack has allowed Rodgers to have more time in the pocket and pick out his receivers, and Adams will soon benefit greatly. They play the Miami Dolphins Week 6, so the outlook for the Packers is great. They’ll focus their attention on Nelson, so Adams could be freed up for a lot of targets.
At the end of the day, Adams is a great prospect who has already experienced a ton of success. He has the best quarterback in the league throwing to him and he’ll soon emerge as a great fantasy option, and will perform well against the Dolphins in Week 6.
