Fantasy Football Week 6 Start or Sit: Julian Edelman

Julian Edelman Start or Sit Fantasy Football Week 6

Now that the New England Patriots look like they have a respectable NFL offense once again, with the boost coming from their dynamic two-tight end duo of Rob Gronkowski and Timothy Wright, is Julian Edelman going to lose his high fantasy football value, especially in PPR leagues?

Edelman and Tom Brady have formed a similar QB-WR tandem to the one that existed when Wes Welker was still on the Patriots. With Gronkowski battling injuries over the past few years and Danny Amendola failing horribly to mimic Welker’s prolific slot-WR play, Edelman has developed into the go-to-guy in the passing game.

However, New England may have found a true replacement for rogue TE Aaron Hernandez in the form of second-year TE Wright. If Wright can continue to have an impact against defenses in the same manner that he punished the Cincinnati Bengals‘ defense to the tune of five receptions for 85 yards an one TD, then opposing defenses are in big trouble.

At the moment it appears that Edelman’s competition from within has increased, but on closer examination, more weapons in the passing game will only open up more opportunities for the diminutive wideout. When Welker played in New England, the passing attack was at its peak with the two-TE sets, and Welker averaged well over 100 receptions per season in the six years that he thrived as Brady’s short-yardage receiver.

Now defenses can’t just focus on trying to shut down Edelman because there are other legitimate threats to account for as Gronkowski’s snap-count keeps growing with each game. The Patriots will face the Buffalo Bills‘ 20th-ranked pass defense on Sunday, and you can be sure that Brady will look to get all of his top passing targets involved in the game to prove that he’s far from being “washed up”.

With Edelman as his proven mainstay in the passing game, you should feel comfortable starting him on your fantasy team as a WR2 or at the flex position, especially if you’re in a PPR league. Edleman is Brady’s new Welker, and with bigger targets in the passing game for defenses to account for, the Patriots should be able to visit the end zone a lot more often.

Therefore, expect Edelman’s current one-TD season total to rise, starting on Sunday.
