Fantasy Football Week 6 Start or Sit: Wes Welker

Wes Welker Start or Sit Fantasy Football Week 6

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

In the only two games that he’s played fresh off a two-game NFL suspension, Wes Welker has been an effective fantasy football player, but he’s yet to reach the end zone for the Denver Broncos thus far. It’s a bit strange because last season, Welker was one of four Broncos record-setting pass-catchers to reach double-digit touchdowns, as he hauled in exactly 10 of Peyton Manning‘s 55 successful air strikes.

Last Sunday, the Broncos passing game was sustained for four entire quarters, when they blew out the Arizona Cardinals, as Manning threw for 400-plus yards and four TDs, which were both season-highs. However, Welker failed to get in on the action, as he watched fellow WR Demaryius Thomas explode for 226 yards and two TDs to ease the early season concerns of his fantasy owners.

However, Manning seems to know when his guys need to be feed the ball a little bit more in red zone territory, so you can be sure that he’ll look to give Welker a couple of scoring opportunities against the hopeless New York Jets on Sunday. Now I’m not saying that Manning is going to force-feed Welker the ball at the cost of throwing erratic passes, but if you watched Denver play at all last year, Eric Decker was the odd man out in the red zone after he dropped a few early-season TD passes, but Manning made sure he got back to Decker plenty of times as the weeks progressed.

Welker is not in the doghouse, so I’m sure that he’ll get his chances to score in MetLife Stadium; the place where the Broncos were embarrassed by the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII. Heaven help those Jets, otherwise it’s going to get ugly!

If you have Welker on your fantasy team, start him in Week 6 as a WR2 or at the flex spot. You won’t be sorry that you played him, but New York’s defense will.
