Fantasy Football Week 7 Waiver Wire Pickup: TE Clay Harbor

The Jacksonville Jaguars are winless, but that does not mean the 2014 season has been a total loss up to this point. Young, talented players are showing plenty signs of promise, including quarterback Blake Bortles, wide receiver Allen Hurns and tight end Clay Harbor. The latter is someone who is relatively unknown to fantasy owners, but he certainly could be worth a waiver wire pickup.

Harbor is currently owned in zero percent of ESPN Fantasy Football leagues. However, that very well could change after he put up 15 points in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans. Sure, the Titans’ defense has surrendered a massive amount of fantasy points to opposing tight ends (28 combined points in Week 4 and 5), but that does not make Harbor’s effort any less thrilling.

The big reason why fantasy owners may continue to stay away from the 27-year-old is because he has not accomplished a lot in his four-plus-year career. In fact, he has only averaged 179.2 yards and 1.4 touchdowns per season through 58 games. On top of that, even though Bortles has shown promise at times, he remains an inexperienced signal caller. That transitions to him not giving the tight end the ball quick enough or in open space to make plays.

In leagues with two tight ends, Harbor is definitely worth a roster addition for owners who could use some insurance. The reality is the tight end position can be rather inconsistent, which means having someone who has the potential of putting up a worthy performance is worth the gamble.

Of course, Harbor’s production is likely to decline once starter Marcedes Lewis returns to action from an injured ankle in Week 12. At the same time, Harbor could put up solid numbers over the next few weeks to make him a staple of the offense. The Jaguars cannot exactly be picky, which means Harbor will be given every opportunity going forward to succeed. Hopefully, Bortles can find a way to get him the ball.
