Fantasy Football Week 7 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR James Jones

James Jones Raiders

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

QB Derek Carr broke out for the first time in his rookie season, and despite Andre Holmes being his favorite target, James Jones is the player making money out of the receiving group for the Oakland Raiders. While Holmes did have two touchdowns, Jones caught five out of seven targets and a touchdown. With Tony Sparano running the show now in Oakland, Jones will get opportunities to shine now that the playbook is expanding.

The Raiders brought over James in the offseason and the final investment has to yet to be determined, but the future is only brighter considering Carr will only improve game-by-game. When Aaron Rodgers was throwing him the football in Green Bay, Jones was one of the best receivers in the NFL. Jones never had the high yardage stats, but he did catch 14 touchdown passes in 2012, which led the league. For fantasy owners who are in deep leagues, Jones is a low-risk, high-reward type of player.

Now that bye week season is upon fantasy players, losing a star receiver for a week makes it difficult to win that week, but with Jones becoming a factor, he could turn into high-end WR2 option. Sure he has had problems with staying consistent, but the future is bright in Oakland because of Carr’s potential and progression, and the lack of a running game. Another thing to remember is that there isn’t a starting-level tight end in Oakland. That means Jones will get some looks in the red zone. If you have a low waiver claim, Jones would be a solid pickup for Week 7.
