Fantasy Football Week 7 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Odell Beckham

It’s not often that rookie wide receivers are able to make an impact in the NFL, but a healthy Odell Beckham Jr. is one of the few who can.

After being sidelined for the first four weeks of his rookie season, Beckham made a huge splash in his NFL debut by winning a jump ball in the end zone for his first career touchdown. He showed that the talent was there, but by being buried on the depth chart, the opportunity was not.

No one likes to see a player get hurt, but this is the former LSU star’s chance to prove himself. Late in the New York Giants’ Week 6 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, Victor Cruz tore his patellar tendon while trying to catch a pass in the end zone. With Cruz sidelined, Beckham will start alongside Rueben Randle and figures to get a good number of looks.

The rookie has a lot of pressure to prove he was worth the 12th overall pick of the 2014 draft, but don’t be sorry you didn’t have him on your team when he does prove it.

Currently, Beckham is owned in less than eight percent of ESPN Fantasy Football leagues. That number is expected to increase significantly by Wednesday morning. If your team is in any kind of need for a long-term receiver or flex play, Beckham is a solid pickup. His presence may not be felt in Week 7, but he figures to be a good long-term move for the rest of the season and for keeper leagues.

The Week 7 matchup doesn’t appear to be very favorable for any of the Giants’ receivers, and it’s not. The Dallas Cowboys have only allowed two touchdowns all season to opposing receivers. After the Giants got shut out by the Eagles, you have to think they’ll come out firing. It’s also likely that the Cowboys are ahead early in this one. So while it’s possible that Beckham might get his targets this week, don’t expect massive production as the Cowboys simply haven’t allowed that.

Beckham is well worth the waiver wire pickup, but his primary value will come down the road in more favorable matchups.
