Philip Rivers: Fantasy Football Week 7 Projection

The San Diego Chargers are off to a fast start in 2014 at 5-1 atop the AFC West, and some argue that they are currently the best team in the NFL. While that can be argued until the cows come home, one thing that cannot be disputed is the performance of their QB Philip Rivers.

Rivers is a clear-cut MVP candidate and has been a fantasy football darling for those owners savvy enough to read the tea leaves and take him as a bargain during draft season.

As I noted over the summer, Rivers’ stellar 2013 campaign went somewhat disrespected, as he was being drafted as a QB that wasn’t even a top 10 option at the position. This was outrageous, borderline negligent, and just simply an uninformed prevailing thought in fantasy circles.

In 2013, he finished as a top five quarterback in all of the important QB stats and lead the league with a 69.5 completion percentage. Rivers made Keenan Allen a 1,000 plus yard receiver (1,046 ) in his rookie campaign despite the duo failing to really click until Week 4 of the season.

Thus far in 2014, Rivers has accumulated 1,756 yards, a 69.3 completion percentage and 15 TDs to just two INTs — which lands him as a top five QB for fantasy purposes. Although the Chargers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7, who have a strong defense, it’s safe to expect Rivers’ momentum to continue.

The Chiefs’ secondary has been suspect at times this season and despite their linebackers being solid at stopping the run, they cannot cover a lick and will struggle against Rivers’ favorite target — TE Antonio Gates – over the middle, on corner routes, and seemingly anywhere else on the field he decides to expose.

Rivers will be a top-five producing QB most weeks, and it is safe to say you can expect him to reach this projection at minimum, but likely far exceed it.

Week 7 Projection - 24-33, 285 yards, two TDs
