Fantasy Football Week 7 Sleeper: Brian Hoyer

The Cleveland Browns are off to a better start than anyone could have imagined they would be off to. After Johnny Manziel dominated headlines throughout the offseason, the Browns are beginning to make the news because of their good play. A reason behind that strong play is the man keeping Manziel on the bench, Brian Hoyer. Hoyer has been consistently steady under center for the Browns throughout five games, and could be playing his way onto the radars of fantasy football owners.

Hoyer hasn’t put up flashy, eye-popping stats, but he has gotten the job done at quarterback. He has thrown only one interception in five games to go with seven touchdowns and 246.4 points per game. That equals out to only about 15 fantasy points a week, which is actually right around what Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles has averaged this season.

While there are obviously stronger options to use in fantasy at the quarterback position, if you were to use Hoyer any week of the season, this would be the one. In Week 7, the Browns will be taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that has hemorrhaged points to opposing quarterbacks throughout the season.

The Jaguars have surrendered the fifth most points in fantasy to opposing quarterbacks. They are racking up the stats against the woeful Jaguars’ pass defense, as they are giving up 294 passing yards and two touchdowns per game, ranking 31st and 27th in the NFL.

Those types of stats make a game manager like Hoyer an attractive bye week option in fantasy. With other free agent options in most leagues, such as Joe Flacco, Ryan Tannehill and Ryan Fitzpatrick, having more difficult matchups, Hoyer is someone to look at for a team owner in a quarterback crunch.

Hoyer will not have a better matchup this season to start him with confidence as your quarterback. With the Browns’ run-heavy scheme, Hoyer is limited stats wise, but against the Jaguars Hoyer has a chance to surpass his game manager stats and help lead your team to a victory in Week 7.
