Fantasy Football Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickup: QB Ryan Tannehill

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw for 277 yards on Sunday against the Chicago Bears, and he now has multiple passing touchdowns in three straight games. Tannehill also has at least 35 rushing yards in each of the last three games, which has led to him putting up at least 17 fantasy points (ESPN scoring) in all three contests (20 or more twice).

The Jacksonville Jaguars held Brian Hoyer to 215 passing yards and zero touchdowns on Sunday, but despite some improvement in the prior two games they still entered Week 7 allowing the fifth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks (19.0 per game). So Tannehill still has a favorable matchup coming against the Jaguars in Week 8, and his running ability can only help.

Tannehill’s schedule after Week 8 has to be considered fairly positive overall, with two very favorable matchups against the New York Jets (Week 13 and Week 17), some fairly neutral matchups and just three games remaining against teams that entered Week 7 in the top-10 of the league against quarterbacks (Baltimore Ravens-Week 14, New England Patriots-Week 15, Minnesota Vikings-Week 16). I realize all three of those come during the playoffs in a lot of fantasy leagues, but the Patriots have allowed at least 16 fantasy points to four straight signal callers and the Vikings have allowed multiple passing touchdowns in four of their last five games. So a couple of the supposed tough matchups left for Tannehill look less daunting based on the last few weeks.

Tannehill is not a top-end fantasy quarterback, and I don’t really expect to him become one over the rest of this season. But he should be owned more widely than he is (35 percent in Yahoo! leagues), and anyone looking for a solid QB2 on the waiver wire can take solace in the fact the Dolphins have already had their bye.
