In Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings, injuries took away two key players of the Buffalo Bills‘ offense. C.J. Spiller will be out for the year because of a broken collarbone, and Fred Jackson will be out for three weeks to a month because of a groin injury. Because of the injuries, 27-year-old Anthony Dixon is now inserted as the starting running back for the next few weeks.

Coming over in the offseason from the San Francisco 49ers, Dixon was seen as a goal-line back and a long-term replacement to Jackson. Instead, Dixon will be the starting running back and that is good news for him. Although he has never been given a starting workload, Dixon has played well in small sample sizes.

He is the classic “bulky” running back at 6-foot-1, 235 pounds. It is yet to be seen whether Dixon can be an every-down back, but history tells us he can be. On 13 carries in Week 7, Dixon managed to rush for 51 yards.

Now that he is the starting running back, it won’t be surprising to see a ton of fantasy football teams pick up the veteran. Sure, Dixon doesn’t have a lot of upside, but he is a decent pickup if a starting running back on your team has a bye week over the next few weeks. Although Dixon will have tough matchups in the next two weeks against the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs, he will get the ball a ton provided that Kyle Orton is the starting quarterback, and he is simply not that good.

Dixon has upside, and putting a claim on him in your league won’t hurt.
