The Buffalo Bills really can’t catch a break, can they? The story should be about the team’s 4-3 record after a last-second win against the Minnesota Vikings, but instead, the story is about how the team will fare at the running back position after losing Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller to injuries.
Anthony Dixon got the bulk of the work after the Jackson and Spiller left the game, but while serviceable, he isn’t a playmaker out of the backfield. Dixon, more than likely, will be in goal-line situations. As for an every-down back, in steps Bryce Brown.
Brown at the age of 23 hasn’t had a ton of opportunities in the NFL, but in limited action with the Philadelphia Eagles he was impressive. With 190 NFL carries, Brown has totaled 878 rushing yards, which is slightly under five yards per carry. Toward the end of 2012, when Brown got a legitimate opportunity as a lead back, he had a four-game stretch where he gained 387 yards on 71 carries with two touchdowns. He has proven in the past that he can carry the load, and while he may be a slight downgrade to the Jackson and Spiller duo, the Bills’ offense shouldn’t skip a beat.
He can also be a weapon in the passing game as well. The Bills like to use their running backs in passing situations, so in that sense, Brown is a much better option than Dixon.
If there is one worry with Brown, though, it is that he has had fumbling issues in the past. He had four fumbles in 2012, so that weakness could once again rear its ugly head. Regardless, you should feel comfortable about picking up and playing Brown for the foreseeable future.
