Fantasy Football Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickup: RB James Starks

The Fantasy Football owners who followed my advice last week on claiming Green Bay Packers running back James Starks off waivers were rewarded handsomely. One week later, I am here to tell anyone who may still be on the fence about placing Starks on their roster that he is definitely worth the pickup.

Starks is currently available in 50.1 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues. That means there are several owners in need of a running back who can be saved with one click of the button. Starks is definitely not someone that will give a consistent performance each week. He also is not someone owners should bank on getting them the guaranteed win. With that said, he is someone who could provide quite the payoff for the type of owner who is willing to take risks.

The Carolina Panthers defense has been horrendous at stopping the run this season, which is the biggest reason why I urged fans to start Starks in Week 7. Another huge reason is because Green Bay’s No. 1 running back, Eddie Lacy, has struggled immensely this season.

The blame cannot be solely placed on Lacy considering the offensive line’s run blocking has been embarrassing, but his struggles have opened the door for Starks to get more touches in recent weeks. I do not foresee that changing much going forward, especially since Starks has provided quality production on limited carries. He is averaging 4.5 yards per carry on 42 attempts and 4.4 yards per catch on seven receptions. He also recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season against the Panthers, which helped him to a season-high nine fantasy points.

The New Orleans Saints have been rather decent at stopping the run this season, which is why giving Starks the start is a big gamble. However, picking him up off waivers is still a move that should be done if it is available.
