Jordy Nelson Week 8 Fantasy Football Projection
The Green Bay Packers (5-2) travel south to take on the reeling New Orleans Saints (2-4) in an NFC matchup that, on paper, would typically forecast as a possible future playoff contest. However, this game is anything but that in 2014 as the Saints have one of the worst records in the NFL despite being alive.
The only reason the Saints have hope is they play in the floundering NFC South, which is the worst division in the game — we all know this to be true and it’s unassailable.
All of Green Bay’s big guns are worth playing this week in fantasy football, but No. 1 WR Jordy Nelson in particular projects to have a stellar game against the Saints lowly secondary. Nelson has produced 712 yards and six TDs on 47 receptions in 2014.
In less than half of a season, Nelson’s 712-yard total is absolutely awe-inspiring. He is on pace for over 100 receptions, 1,500 yards receiving and 13 TDs . The Packers really don’t get any production out of the TE position the way they did when Jermichael Finley was flourishing; this trend has rendered Nelson as QB Aaron Rodgers’ security blanket and quasi-possession receiver.
Nelson is third overall in the game in targets (73), which proves that statement undeniable.
Of the seven games Nelson has played, more than half of the time he is pulling in nine receptions or more, which makes him a rare player for fantasy purposes. Due to his yardage totals and prowess for TDs, he’s an excellent option in standard scoring formats and even more so in one-point PPR (points per reception) formats like Draft Kings and Draft Day.
Oftentimes, he can rack up 10 points solely through receptions and obliterate what a far more TD-dependent WR option would produce.
In Fan Duel contests this week, excluding those that include the Thursday night game, Nelson is the most expensive WR option and is in the same range with the Dallas Cowboys‘ Dez Bryant and the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ Antonio Brown.
Being that Fan Duel uses a 0.5 PPR format, he’s not the absolute must-play that he is elsewhere, but I’d still take him over both of those aforementioned players if I was looking to spend in that price range. It’s obvious that Nelson has the better matchup over both players.
On Draft Kings, Nelson is an absolute must-play. At $7,800 against the salary cap, he is expensive, but worth it on every level. His floor is nearly non-existent since he can get you 10 receptions for 60 yards or more (16 points), even on a day where he is held without a score. And his ceiling is among the highest of any player in the NFL.
New Orleans’ defense has been putrid this season and currently ranks 31st in the NFL in allowing fantasy points to opposing receivers. Nelson could be in store for something very special down in the bayou in Week 8 — don’t miss out.
Projection: eight receptions, 100 yards, one TD
