On a night where the spotlight shined bright on Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning, as he broke Brett Favre’s all-time passing touchdown record, there was a player by the name of Ronnie Hillman who quietly made a name for himself within the fantasy football spectrum.

In both his starts the past two weeks Hillman has been spectacular, rushing a total of 38 times for 174 yards (4.5 YPC) and two touchdowns, averaging a respectful 16 fantasy points. Hillman has returned instant dividends to fantasy owners who were able to scoop him up after RB Montee Ball went down with a groin injury in Week 5.

In Week 8 of the NFL season, Hillman is set to take on his division rivals the San Diego Chargers Thursday night. The Chargers surrender 16 fantasy points per game to opposing RBs and are one of the worst when it comes to protecting the pass against RBs, allowing 48 receptions for 365 yards and five TDs. Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was able to amass 107 (95 on the ground) total yards from scrimmage and a rushing TD against San Diego last week, which bodes well for Hillman’s fantasy projections Thursday night.

The Chargers will also be preoccupied attempting to contain Manning and his arsenal of receiving weapons. The past two weeks the Broncos’ offense has been able to come out firing on all cylinders, thus opening up the run-game for the shifty, speedster to flourish. Hillman has been their every-down back, even around the goal line, so I don’t expect backups Juwan Thompson and C.J. Anderson to factor too much throughout the game.

The trend of steamrolling teams should continue this week at home for the Broncos, with Hillman leading the way in the backfield. Fantasy owners should feel free to insert the San Diego State standout in their lineups as a strong RB2 candidate.

Fantasy Forecast: 19 carries for 88 yards. Four receptions for 36 yards and a TD.
