Fantasy Football Week 8 Waiver Wire: QB Zach Mettenberger

Another quarterback change is coming in Tennessee, with Wednesday’s report that rookie Zach Mettenberger will be the Titans’ starting quarterback in Week 8 against the Houston Texans. Jake Locker has been injured again, and Charlie Whitehurst has not been a standout, so the future is now for the Titans and Mettenberger could now be on the radar of fantasy football owners.

Is the rookie out of LSU a top waiver wire addition right away?

Mettenberger’s first start comes against a Texans’ defense that is in the middle of the pack against quarterbacks (15.7 fantasy points per game; ESPN scoring), but they have allowed multiple passing touchdowns in five straight games. After a bye in Week 9, two matchups are coming against teams that enter Week 8 in the top-10 against quarterbacks (Baltimore Ravens-Week 10, Pittsburgh Steelers-Week 11), but things get a bit easier after that.

From Week 12-Week 16, Mettenberger has particularly favorable matchups in Week 12 (Philadelphia Eagles), Week 15 (New York Jets) and Week 16 (Jacksonville Jaguars), as all three come into this week’s action in the bottom half of the league against quarterbacks (ESPN scoring). Surrounding those games are a rematch with the Texans in Week 13, and home games against the New York Giants (Week 14) and Indianapolis Colts (Week 17). The Colts have allowed the second-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks so far this season (12.6 per game), and that stands out as the only particularly bad matchup for Mettenberger over the final six games of the season.

Mettenberger’s value as a waiver wire addition hinges on him keeping the starting job for the rest of the season, which is not guaranteed as long as Locker remains on the team. That said, owners in deep two-quarterback leagues could consider adding Mettenberger immediately, and his performance will be worth keeping an eye on going forward since he does have some solid talent around him.
