Fantasy Football Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickup: Washington Redskins D/ST

Redskins Defense

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The 2014 fantasy football season is already halfway over. Most fantasy already know where they lie as far as playoffs are concerned. The others, most likely sitting at 5-3, 4-4 or even 3-5, are still playing for the now. If that’s the case, there is one move you can make in order to move up in the standings. Pick up the Washington Redskins defense.

Despite holding a 3-5 record, the Redskin defense has played really well over the last couple of weeks. The unit scored eight points in Week 7 and nine on Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. In those two games, the defense has recorded six sacks, including five on Tony Romo.

The defense was stellar in all aspects. The front line pressured the quarterback and the secondary held Dez Bryant to just three catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. However, the rush defense wasn’t playing up to par, allowing DeMarco Murray to rush 19 times for 141 yards.

Looking ahead to Week 9, the Redskins face the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings hold the same record, mostly because the offense cannot put up points. In order for the Redskins to win this game, they need to stop Jerick McKinnon and force Teddy Bridgewater to throw a lot. The Vikings don’t have sueprstars like Bryant and Murray to make plays in coverage.

The defense is owned in just 19.7 percent of ESPN.com leagues. With two of the top three defenses (Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions) on bye this week, the Redskins are a nice fill in.
