Fantasy Football Week 9 Start or Sit: Eddie Royal

Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers‘ offense have been superb so far this season. The Chargers’ passing attack is one of the best in the league, and every player on the offense has the chance to put up some good numbers on a week-to-week basis. Despite the Chargers’ high-powered offense, the only problem in San Diego is that Rivers has a lot of options to throw to so each player’s fantasy upside is limited.

Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal got off to a fast start in the 2014 season, but he has cooled off of late. Through the first four games of the season, Royal had four touchdowns and over 200 yards receiving; he was looking like a steal for owners who had him. Over the last four games, Royal has just one touchdown and 138 receiving yards to his name. The question is, can owners trust Royal week in and week out?

Well, in Week 9 the Chargers go up against a very strong Miami Dolphins‘ defense that ranks No. 3 against the pass this season. In the last two weeks alone, Royal has only 49 yards receiving and four catches. It’s not like Royal isn’t a solid secondary receiver. The Chargers’ offense doesn’t rely on one to two players to make plays; everyone is involved. Keenan Allen, Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd all play a big role in the Chargers’ passing attack, and each of them draw a lot of attention from Rivers.

Right now, it is hard to consider Royal a viable start in any league that is less than 14 teams. The Chargers’ offense will score a lot of points every week and Royal could be involved in the offense in Week 9, but there are too many risks that outweigh the reward. Owners who are desperate for a No. 3 or No. 4 receiver in deep leagues could find Royal worth a shot, but his upside is not very high in Week 9 based on the matchup and the Chargers’ spread style of offense.
