Fantasy Football Week 9 Start or Sit: Joe Flacco

If not for his five-touchdown performance three weeks ago, Joe Flacco wouldn’t even be in conversations as a startable quarterback. In standard scoring leagues, Flacco ranks as the 13th best gunslinger. Take away three of his touchdowns against an abysmal Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass defense and he’s ranked as the 17th best QB option, a backup on most teams. That game was a highlight for him and fantasy owners alike. But since then he’s been subpar, and this week looks to continue the trend going against the Baltimore Ravens‘ rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

While his performance history against the AFC North rivals isn’t at the height of Jay Cutler against the Green Bay Packers, he hasn’t really proven to be a reliable fantasy option. In 13 rounds against the Steelers, he barely manages to find the end zone, throws a pick once every two games on average and throws anywhere from 115 to 300 yards.  He even had one game with three touchdowns. He’s the epitome of unpredictable against them. But if I have to guess which Flacco shows up in Pittsburgh this week, it’s the disappointing Flacco.

It should be noted that the good Flacco showed up in their Week 2 matchup, posting 14 points.  But Flacco has been in a bad groove lately, throwing a one-to-two TD-to-INT ratio in the past two weeks. Combine that with the Ravens flying into Heinz field where Flacco has never thrown more than one touchdown and has had a multiple-interception performance, and you’re likely to be disappointed by starting him. He’ll find the end zone, but he won’t be able to tack on many yards and will have throw at least one interception. Is he startable with that? Yes, but only if he’s your only option. Look elsewhere for a more guaranteed performance.
