Fantasy Football Week 9 Start or Sit: Vernon Davis

Tight end Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers has been an enormous disappointment to fantasy football owners this season. If you haven’t already dropped Davis, you will at least want to stash him this week.

Davis’ best numbers came from Week 1 when the 49ers kicked off the 2014 NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys, who has allowed the third-most points per game to tight ends this season. The 30-year-old had 44 receiving yards and two touchdowns for a total of 16.40 points. Since then, Davis has only averaged about 1.6 points per game. He has also faced a random slew of injuries/disabilities this year, such as back spasms, which is most likely the reason for his poor performance.

This Sunday, the 49ers will host the St. Louis Rams. Despite being last in the NFC West, the Rams have only given up an average of less than seven points to opposing tight ends. Factor that into Davis’ inadequate production, and you have yourself a recipe for fantasy disaster.

There are eight teams on a bye this week, so options for tight ends might be slim. Tight ends I would advise starting over Davis are Rob Gronkowski, Julius Thomas, Antonio Gates and Greg Olsen. If you do not own any of these players, the waiver wire will be your best friend this week. Four tight ends you could target on the waiver wire include Larry Donnell, Kyle Rudolph, Timothy Wright and Jared Cook.

Either way, Davis is not your go-to guy this or probably the rest of the season.
