2015 Fantasy Baseball: Don’t Write Off Cliff Lee Just Yet

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee was drafted within the top-10 starting pitchers in nearly every fantasy baseball format this past season. He has been a workhorse throughout his career and has always thrown 200 innings. There was nothing to suggest he would have a down year in 2014.

Unfortunately, Lee did have a down year. He was sent to the DL with a strained flexor tendon early in the season and missed months of action. He tried to return towards the end of the summer, but he was eventually shutdown for good after aggravating the flexor tendon in his left arm. It was a disastrous ending to a disastrous season for the superstar hurler.

Despite the forgettable season, though, the veteran still has some fantasy value.

Firstly, all indications are that Lee will be 100% ready to go by opening day. He has been receiving platelet-enriching plasma injections to expedite the healing process. He was luckily able to avoid surgery and should reclaim his spot in the rotation in training camp.

Before last year’s debacle, Lee threw over 200 innings in five straight seasons, including seven of the last eight seasons. He has notoriously been injury free throughout his career and should not be judged on one down year. This guy is a true workhorse.

Lee may have not have many years left in the tank, but he can still be a reliable veteran for at least one more year. Don’t draft him as a SP1 anymore, but he could end up being an absolute steal as a SP3 next spring.
