Fantasy Football Week 10 Start or Sit: Alex Smith

Alex Smith

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Week 10 is here and there are another six teams on bye. As a result, fantasy owners are scouring through the waiver wire looking for replacement players. However, you can’t afford to pick up a player that won’t benefit your team, especially with the playoffs on the line. With that being said, Alex Smith should be left on your bench or waiver wire.

Smith is the perfect quarterback for Andy Reid. He is a game manager. He doesn’t make many risky throws or pass downfield. Over eight weeks, he has 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. Yet, he has just 246 pass attempts. I think Ben Roethlisberger has more attempts in his last two games. Point is, Smith doesn’t throw enough to be a viable fantasy option.

Another reason not to start Smith is that he doesn’t have the best weapons. No Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver has yet to catch a touchdown this season. The tight ends and running backs are the only ones to catch a touchdown from Smith. He has averaged 13.6 fantasy points per game this season.

The Chiefs play the Buffalo Bills this week. The passing defense isn’t the best, but with the lack of chemistry between Smith and the receiving corps, there isn’t much to worry about. Looking ahead, the Chiefs face some tough defenses in the Seattle SeahawksDenver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals in three of their next four games.

If you are in need of a quarterback this week, I would rather pick up Carson Palmer (64.8 percent owned in ESPN.com leagues), Joe Flacco (66.4 percent) and even Mark Sanchez (32.9 percent). Point is, do not start Smith this week.
