Fantasy Football Week 12 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Kenny Britt

There wasn’t much that went according to expectations in the St. Louis Rams‘ 22-7 upset of the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and one of the big surprises was the performance of Rams receiver Kenny Britt. Britt turned in his best game of the season, catching four passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.

With Brian Quick on IR and Shaun Hill back under center, there is going to be some rush to add Britt this week. He leads all Rams receivers in targets, receptions, yards, and touchdowns, though he is behind at least one of Jared Cook, Lance Kendricks, and Benjamin Cunningham in all of those categories. That being said, for whatever it’s worth, Britt is the Rams’ No. 1 receiver.

That doesn’t mean you need to claim Britt this week, however. It is important to note that the vast majority of his production came on a 63 yard touchdown in the first quarter. The rest of the game saw him catch three passes for 65 yards, which is much more in line with his production the rest of the season. This was only the fourth time all year Britt topped 50 yards, and just his second game with four or more receptions. The season high seven targets are encouraging, but that doesn’t mean that Britt is suddenly going to be made a focal point of the offense.

The Rams’ schedule isn’t overwhelming down the stretch, and there are definitely going to be opportunities to put up some solid numbers. However, it is best to wait another week and see if Britt is actually going to see an continued uptick in targets, or if this was a one game occurrence. You never want to overreact to one big game, especially when that game really only boiled down to one big play.

Overall, Britt is worth a speculative add in deep leagues or for teams really desperate for receiver help. For most owners, however, the right move is to be patient before jumping on Britt. He’s been a very inconsistent fantasy contributor this season, and one big game doesn’t necessarily change that.
