Fantasy Football Week 12 Sleeper: Devonta Freeman

Falcons

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Devonta Freeman, rookie running back for the Atlanta Falcons, was mostly the third string behind Steven Jackson and Antone Smith this fantasy football season. Now, with Smith going on Injured Reserve due to a broken leg, Freeman is set to see a heavier workload while splitting some time with Jackson.

After Smith left the game last week, Freeman received six carries for 28 yards. He has been able to learn from Jackson’s veteran leadership, and now he gets his chance to prove his worth to the offense, which has been lacking in production this season.

Freeman stands a stout 5-foot-9, 210 pounds, which gives him an advantage as most offensive linemen are over six feet. He is able to be shaded to the defenders for a second or two which allows him to find holes easier and exploit the gaps. I believe that the Falcons will use him a lot in third down situations, especially in the red zone due to his size.

If he sees time in the red zone, he has the potential to score a lot of touchdowns, which means fantasy owners will be happy with his production. This may be his first opportunity to get a decent amount of carries, but with his size and ability I believe he will be a huge factor in the Falcons offense and on a fantasy team. If you need an option at the second running back slot or the FLEX position, Freeman could be a big sleeper this week as they take on the Cleveland Browns.
