Second-year Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has had himself a nice little season thus far. While he isn’t catching multiple touchdowns each game, he has been a decent plug-and-play flex option for most of the season. Kansas City’s pass game is pretty minimal, ranking 31st in passing yardage in the league. This statistic foreshadows both good and bad things for Kelce; while the Chiefs might not look for him much downfield, he has relatively little competition from Kansas City’s receivers to become a No. 1 or No. 2 receiving option.
This week, Kelce and the Chiefs travel to the Black Hole to take on the winless Oakland Raiders. So Kelce should start, right? Not so fast. Despite being 0-10, the Raiders actually rank a respectable 19th in team defensive DVOA this season. In addition, the Raiders are the fourth-best team in the league against opposing tight ends. Oakland’s ramshackle secondary of cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and D.J. Hayden, as well as aged legendary safety Charles Woodson, has been borderline respectable this season.
Kelce has more or less disappeared when playing above-average pass defenses, such as those of the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers, which are ranked second and first in passing defense DVOA, respectively. Kelce put up a mere 48 yards across both games. While Kelce was able to get into the end zone in both games, touchdowns are rather random and cannot necessarily be counted on for a player with low usage like Kelce. Given the Raiders’ unexpected success against opposing tight ends, Kelce is likely to struggle; thus, the verdict is for him to sit.
