Fantasy Football Week 12 Waiver Wire Pickup: QB Josh McCown

When I first saw Josh McCown play quarterback for the SMU Mustangs, I never thought I would be writing a fantasy football article about him one day; and if I did, it would be in reference to his upcoming start for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL.

I thought this because when he played for the Mustangs, he would run the quarterback sneak every play due to his inaccurate arm, but he was too chubby to outrun anyone so that just made watching him comical. As a result of this, his nickname around campus and on the team was Snacks.

But ever since he transferred to Sam Houston State and worked on his game, he has actually turned into a serviceable quarterback who ended up being the third overall pick at that position in the NFL draft. It’s amazing what a change of scenery can do for your career.

Well, the same can be said for McCown’s time in the NFL. He started off with the Arizona Cardinals and almost disappeared into obscurity until he got another chance with the Chicago Bears. Once Jay Cutler got hurt, he came in and utilized the awesome weapons that were at his disposal and played his way to a big contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He once again fell on hard times when the team went with Mike Glennon for a short spell, but now that he has another shot, he seems to be making the most of it. He went off for 288 yards and two touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons, and he is facing another suspect defense this week in the Chicago Bears.

The Bears are ranked 25th in the league against the pass, giving up 256 yards per game, and quarterbacks are having career days against them. Tom Brady had 354 yards and five touchdowns against their porous defense and Aaron Rogers went off for 315 yards and six touchdowns in only about three quarters of play. Even Ryan Tannehill had 277 yards with two touchdowns on this defense, so it’s safe to say that McCown will have plenty of time to throw to open receivers this Sunday.

Given the fact that rookie Mike Evans is slowly turning into a superstar with his recent production, now is the time to scoop up McCown.

I will put out a warning of buyer beware as he does face tough defenses in of the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers in the next three weeks, so he may only provide some temporary relief for your team.
