When Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles was lost for the remainder of the season due to a broken collarbone, it became time for Mark Sanchez to step up to the challenge of being the starter once again. Well, the former New York Jets first start against the Carolina Panthers was a tremendous success as he passed for 332 yards with two TDs and zero INTs in a 45-21 blowout win. His QB rating for that game was an impressive 102.5 and it seemed like everything was going to be smooth sailing.
However, the Panthers defense is nothing close to the dominant force that they were last year, and his first true test came the following week against the Green Bay Packers.
The Packers were a far superior team with a pass rush grade of 15 and a pass coverage grade of 9.7, and it showed after the Eagles were destroyed in a 53-20 beatdown. Even though Sanchez threw for 346 yards and two TDs, he also threw two INTs, lost two fumbles and was sacked three times. It was one of those games that Sanchez would like to forget as soon as possible, and it’s safe to say that he has happily moved forward from that embarrassment.
Going into Week 12, the Eagles will get to face the Tennessee Titans, and this is a matchup that will be more to Sanchez’s liking. While the Titans do boast an impressive pass rush grade of 13.8, they also have a pass coverage grade of -10.5, and that’s something that Sanchez can take advantage of with WRs Jeremy Maclin and rookie Jordan Matthews.
Some fantasy owners of Sanchez may worry about Tennessee’s improved play in the secondary and especially over the last three weeks since they’ve allowed the sixth-fewest fantasy points to WRs during that span. However, their opponents were a slightly struggling Pittsburgh Steelers team, the offensively enigmatic Baltimore Ravens and the offensively deficient Houston Texans. The Eagles’ offense is an entirely different beast compared to those teams, and it will show on Sunday.
It’s understandable for Sanchez owners to be 50-50 on starting him, but he does have low-end QB1 upside this week. Therefore, he is definitely worth starting in a two-QB league, and he may be worth starting in standard leagues unless elite QBs such as Andrew Luck or Aaron Rodgers are on the same roster.
Do not be afraid of what happened in Green Bay — the “Sanchise” will be back on track in Week 12 and it’s safe to start him.
