Fantasy Football Week 12 Start or Sit: Martellus Bennett

Martellus Bennett’s viability as a fantasy starter has been steadily declining for the last six weeks or so. After starting off looking like Tony Gonzalez, Bennett’s productivity has not been great and he is barely clinging on to being a viable fantasy starter at all.

The problem is any Bennett owners were probably banking on him as an every week starter based on his September, so most likely they don’t have another strong starting tight end option on their roster.

This is nothing new from Bennett. In 2013, Bennett had three touchdowns the first two weeks of the season and only scored two the rest of the season. In 2012, Bennett scored three touchdowns the first three games of the year and scored only two the rest of the year. Bennett’s September production is outstanding, but his production from October through December is significantly less. Whether that is due to nagging injuries or game planning may vary from year to year, but 2014 is heading down the exact same path.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ defense gives up the 14th fewest fantasy points to tight ends, right in the middle of the pack. With Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall coming off big games, it looks like Jay Cutler may be looking more towards his two star wideouts and utilizing Matt Forte in the short passing game. Plus, with Marquess Wilson going to be worked into the offense more and more, the targets for Bennett look like they will continue to decline.

If you have another viable tight end, you should absolutely start them this week. However, odds are that if you have Bennett, he’s been your guy and you don’t have anyone else on your roster. Maybe your league has been snoozing and Kyle Rudolph or Marcedes Lewis are available coming off their injuries so you could give them a go.

Otherwise, don’t expect much production from Bennett if you are forced to start him. He should be sitting this week for the majority of owners.
