Fantasy Football Week 13 Waiver Wire Pickup: RB Dan Herron

Let me start this off with a moment of silence for the fallen Ahmad Bradshaw who, along with Arian Foster, was single-handedly carrying my fantasy football team to greatness. Sadly, he is now on the injured reserve. Pour some out.

With Bradshaw done for the season, the Indianapolis Colts had two options at running back heading into last week’s game. The first option was Trent Richardson, who has done absolutely nothing since being traded to the Colts other than reminding us all that you should never trade a first-round pick for any player on the Cleveland Browns.

The second was second-year back Dan Herron, who actually got the start over Richardson and for the most part, was impressive. Herron ended the game with 12 carries for 65 yards along with 5 catches for 31 yards. While Richardson did end with one more carry than Herron, he only rushed for a pathetic 42 yards and had zero catches.

He did have a touchdown, but at this point that helped no one since no one was starting him. With Richardson’s never-ending struggle, I would feel pretty safe in thinking Herron will get his touches. Is it safe though to bet on Herron being an every game starter/contributor? Not really.

The Colts’ backfield is joining the likes of the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots in unpredictability with Bradshaw out. Herron could be worth picking up moving forward, but with the fantasy playoffs coming soon, you want every player you start to give you the most possible points in return.

I’m not sure Herron is going to be consistent enough to be worth starting in the most important games of the season. It doesn’t help that the first team he’ll be facing is the Washington Redskins, who give up the fourth-fewest fantasy points to opposing backs.
