Fantasy Football Week 13 Start or Sit: Andy Dalton

To people who actually know and follow football on a regular basis, they know that Andy Dalton is at best a backup quarterback in the NFL. Sure he can put together a string of two or three good performances in a row, but once the lights come on and he faces a solid defense, his true colors come out and his team suffers as a result of it. Just look at his numbers in prime time or playoff games — they are brutal!

But fantasy football diehards will give you a puzzled look when you present this argument to them, because he was a top-five fantasy quarterback last year. So in their eyes, he’s a solid option and wouldn’t hesitate to start him. See, Dalton is the rare case of being a far better fantasy player than he is a real-life player on the field.

And as far as the fantasy game is concerned, I have to say that he is actually in the middle of a pretty good stretch. After his debacle against the Cleveland Browns where he threw three interceptions and only completed 30 percent of his passes, he has followed that up with two solid games where he has completed 70 percent of his passes, thrown for 453 yards, and has four touchdown passes to only one interception.

This week, he faces a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense that has been playing better of late, but is still ranked 22nd in the league against the pass. He also has A.J. Green back and playing at a high level, posting 18 receptions, 248 yards and a touchdown since his return.

So, starting Dalton this week is a no-brainer, but I wouldn’t press your luck for long.
