Fantasy Football Week 14 Waiver Wire Pickup: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick
One of the biggest mistakes we all make as fantasy owners is overreacting to one big game and wasting our waiver claim on a player who is never going to make that kind of impact again (looking at you, Jonas Gray). As the fantasy playoffs begin this week, one of the players who that mistake will be made on is Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who had the best game of his career on Sunday by throwing for 358 yards and 6 touchdowns.
So, should you go out and add Fitzpatrick for the playoff run? The answer for most fantasy owners is no, definitely not. Fitzpatrick had only thrown for 11 TDs the entire season prior to Sunday’s performance, which also happened to be his only 300 yard game of the season. The Texans are a run first team, and that isn’t going change. There is nothing in Fitzpatrick’s career to suggest that this was anything other than big time outlier.
So, if you are in a normal 10 or 12 team league that only starts one quarterback, there is no need to get Fitzpatrick. However, if you are in a 14, 16, or higher team league, or a league that starts two quarterbacks, you should give Fitzpatrick some sleeper consideration. Although everything I said previously holds true, he has a very favorable schedule and could supply just enough points to be useful.
Over the next three weeks, the Texans play the Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and Baltimore Ravens, who rank 24th, 25th, and 31st respectively in pass yards allowed per game. For those whose leagues play in Week 17, a rematch with the Jags will be on tap. That is a dream schedule for fantasy owners, and there will be opportunities for Fitzpatrick to throw the ball and put up decent numbers.
In your average fantasy league, don’t bother to claim Fitzpatrick and put him on your bench because there are better options available. However, in deep and two QB leagues, Fitzpatrick is worth some consideration due his favorable schedule, and he could be a sneaky pickup that gives you some decent production in the playoffs.
