Fantasy Football Week 14 Waiver Wire Pickup: WR Stedman Bailey

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey is a player that has been talked about as a dark horse fantasy contributor for a few weeks now, and over the last two games we have started to see that production. One week after setting new career highs with 7 receptions for 89 yards and his first NFL touchdown, Bailey backed up that performance with a 5 catch, 100 yard game in the Rams’ blowout win over the Oakland Raiders.

Bailey’s 15 targets over the last two games dwarf the 10 he received in the other eight games in which he’s appeared this season, and it looks like the Rams and Shaun Hill want to get the second year man more involved in the offense. Bailey is developing as a route runner while showing consistent hands, and the big play ability that he had in college is working its way into his pro performances.

You don’t want to get too optimistic here, as the Rams do rank 26th in the league in pass yards per game and 21st in passing touchdowns. However, over the next three weeks the Rams play at the Washington Redskins and home against the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants, all teams that can be beaten through the air. With the Rams having nothing to play for other than development, it makes sense that they would get young players like Bailey the ball as much as possible to get them more experience.

The Raiders actually have a respectable defense, as do the San Diego Chargers, so it’s not like Bailey’s been beating up on terrible secondaries the last couple weeks. What we’re seeing is a young playing developing and growing into his role in the offense, and there is no reason to think that won’t continue.

Bailey may not be a major contributor for your fantasy team, but he is one of the highest upside options at receiver available on the waiver wire. If you’re looking to add some depth or find an injury replacement, Bailey is a good choice and could provide some surprising production in the fantasy playoffs.
